Event Review: Re-imagine - Black Women In Britain Exhibition, Brixton

With the the curtain closing this weekend, I gladly attended this exhibition and although showcased in a smaller space than I had anticipated, was nicely put together.
Highlighting the significant contributions of well known Black British female figures such as Olive Morris and Mary Seacole, it also included a few others who in my opinion, we do not hear enough about such as:

*Seaman William Brown - Who was the first Black woman to serve in the Royal Navy by passing as a man

*Jess Huntley - An activist and scholar

*Beryl Gilroy - A children's author and Britain's first Black Head Teacher

*Mrs. Doris Morris -  Who was head Convenor for the Electrical Electronic Telecommunication And Plumbing Union and also the Mother of Olive Morris

*Adelaide Hall - A Black American woman who replaced English entertainer Gracie Field's as Britain's top earning entertainer during the 1940's.

As well as portraits and informative display text, one of the main highlights for me, was the inclusion of forward thinking educating tools used as a part of the exhibition, which I would describe as handheld pods, that when tapped against interactive spots on the walls, played pre-recorded audio that offered further explanation on associated events and figures. I found this to be very clever as it meant people had to be respectfully quiet in order for others to listen and really be educated.

On that note, I will definitely be heading back to the Black Cultural Archives for many future events.

Happy Birthday Gordon Parks, Shirley Chisholm & Bo Jackson!

Fashion: Winter Teal Look Book

Just because winter is here there is no reason to pack away the skirts and dresses..if you wear them that is lol
Winter fashion is much more versatile these days.
Gone are the days where you looked like you were 5 stone heavier under your 3 layers, giant fleece coat, woolly hat and huge 'swallow me' scarf.
There is so much more choice these days and this was the inspiration behind this look, which I built around a sexy pair of Thigh High Boots. I chose flat boots as they're much more comfortable to me and are much more practical in the cold; walking in heals is too painful lool
Next I added a Teal Skater Skirt, Brown Cami-top and a sheer Multi-print Blouse.
For the accessories I added a Fur Snood, Black Biker Coat, Black Handbag and Pave Ball Drop earrings from the SweetOrangeBou earring collection.
For the hair, I would go for simple pin up do to keep the ends of my hair out of the cold, as it's said to reduce hair breakage and drying of the hair and scalp.
Try something like this fabulous Sistrin n
and pin to your hearts content to create a shape you like.

News: No Justice For Mike Brown

As I found myself awake at 5:30am this morning, I reached for my phone to see the almost unsurprising news from a friend, that the officer who killed teenager Mike Brown was not indicted. Therefore no justice for Mike Bown.

What is this? How many of Our Kings have to be beaten, almost killed or killed by police before they admit there's a problem?

The fact the Mike was unarmed and 148 feet AWAY from the SUV should be basis enough for a police officer to use their better judgement and not shoot. Even after they tried to assassinate Mike's character by naming him as a suspect in a robbery (of which the shooting officer was not aware of at the time), there was still no basis to gun down this unarmed baby, and don't even get me started on the 12 year old from Ohio who was also killed very recently!

Feels to me like they really have been instructed to show no mercy and shoot to kill when it comes to Our boys, without giving them the chance to explain themselves first, and that makes me so angry.

I just pray that Mike's family can somehow find peace and will exercise the option to appeal.

In the meantime, with inevitable protest and rioting activities following I also pray, that no more of Our Kings are hurt or killed.

In the words of the late great Michael Jackson: "All I wana say is that, they don't really care about us".

Fashion: The European Traveller Look Book By Kitty D

Hello World!

They call me KD and I love things all Fashion and Travel. Better yet I love to travel to shop! Who doesn’t?
Shay has kindly allowed me to blog here and there about my travels and the styles I see along the way. Sometimes it'll be on travels to work, other times it’ll be from around the world!

Let’s start with my most recent trip...

I just came back from the beautiful Capital of Hungary ~ Budapest. Seeing as it’s Autumn the colours most dominant are warm and cosy Maroons, Emerald, Plum and Browns. I’d see these lovely colours on big chunky woollen knit jumpers and Bobble hats but my fav find was a gorgeous, GIANT, thick Beige and Brown Scarf from Zara. I’ll admit Zara is a weakness for me, however as most, I couldn’t justify spending £30 on a scarf.
It is absolutely stunning though, which is why I walked around the shop for an hour wearing it (as seen below) but, eventually I went for a walk down Fashion Street and decided that if it was still calling my name; I’d get it...only to pop into H&M and find an almost replica for £12! It’s beaut and very much High Street Fashion!

The scarf would suit all skin types as it has the lovely Brown base colour but, also has lovely Beige tones which can make blondes (such as myself) look just as fabulous. For the overall look, I've paired it with Leather Pants, a loose White Jumper and Black Chelsea boots.
