TV: 'Who Do You Think You Are - Reggie Yates'

Last night I sat down to watch one of my favourite BBC shows (depending on who is featured) ‘Who Do You Think You Are’, which across the US and UK versions has boasted the likes of Spike Lee and Colin Jackson, as they find out more information about their deep seeded roots in previous series.

Last night’s episode was one I was looking forward to from the current series, mainly because I used to have a minor crush on this guy (whom many of you will be familiar with given that the young British actor, television presenter and radio DJ, has graced our screens and airwaves for many years!) and overall, I think it was a good watch as Reggie set out to find out more about his father’s side of the family since he didn't know too much about them growing up, and travelled to Ghana to discover little unexpected surprises about his lineage, as well as receive a swift lesson in the etiquette of being in the presence of elders and chiefs in Ghana. That part was so funny, I actually laughed out loud but it was nice to see him so welcomed and be told that he had returned home.

This episode and the rest of the current series of ‘Who Do You Think You Are’ is up for the next three weeks on BBC iPlayer so definitely catch it if you can.

New Music: Mary J. Blige - 'Whole Damn Year' & 'Therapy'

Uploaded just yesterday to her official Vivo channel, are two brand new songs by The Queen Of Hip Hop Soul.

On the first track entitled 'Whole Damn Year' written by Emily Sandé, Mary takes us through an emotional roller coaster ride in relation to the seasons over the course of a year, which she explains is how long it has taken for her to heal and repair form a very bad relationship;

While on the second track entitled 'Therapy' written by Ed Sheerhan, Mary then goes on to ask why she should sit and be miserable over something that isn't worth the time or energy when she could just go to therapy twice a day;

Production wise I think both songs have quite a sombre tone which works well in tandem with the lyrical content and even though I preferred 'Whole Damn Year' over 'Therapy' at first, the more I listen to the latter, the more I enjoy it just as much.

I like Happy Mary so I hope she doesn't stay sad for too long but, in the meantime I can appreciate her giving it to us straight no chaser like only she can.

Both tracks are taken from Mary's forthcoming album 'The London Sessions' to be released 2nd December.

Happy Birthday Frances Harper & Joe Greene!

News: Brett Bailey’s Exhibit B Cancelled

Result!

The saying ‘Actions Speak Louder Than Words’ rang very true for the Barbican yesterday evening, when they decided to go ahead with hosting the tasteless Brett Bailey Exhibition, despite the petition created by SaraMyers being drawn up well in advance. I think it’s a good thing they underestimated the lengths of how far those against it would go, because the Community has proven yet again, that once bonded together as a strong collective,  We are more than capable of attaining the result We want.

In regards to the exhibit itself, the bottom line is that when a descendant of colonists has taken it upon himself to tell the most sensitive stories of those colonized while reaping a healthy earning, then it remains a case of somebody on the outside making a profit off of another people’s misery. That said, each ethnic group should retain the right to re-enact the most sensitive parts of their history, if and when they see fit.

Fashion: Autumnal Work Look Book

As it's officially the first day of autumn, I thought it would be a nice idea to start the new season with an Autumnal Look Book for work...
Autumn is one of my favourite seasons as the colours are warm, orange (lol) and vibrant without being too bright and in your face.

For this look I have gone for a Waterfall Blazer, warm coloured top and a loose fit leather look Midi Skirt.
I have kept the accessories and shoes simple with warm brown tones and a funky Aztec snood to add some texture to the look.
For the earrings I've added an Oval Pink and Wood Hoop Beaded earring from the SweetOrangeBou collection.

To bring it all together I would wear my hair in a halo braid....something like the fabulous Tracee Ellis Ross!

Concert Review: Lauryn Hill At Brixton Academy

As much as we love L Boogie myself and Micky decided to give this concert a pass, as we have been privy to her concert reviews over the last few years and didn't want to take the risk of being disappointed.

Below however, is a review from one of Shay's sister's who decided to attend over the weekend and unfortunately it coincide's with the majority of reviews already out there:

"Ms Lauryn Hill..

Where do I start? Flabbergasted! And I don't mean that in a good way unfortunately.
*Pause* I am still very much in shock!

When you think of the Ms. Lauryn Hill you automatically think of the Beautiful Songstress from 'Sister Act', The Fugees, and THE album 'The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill', right?! And some of you may even know of the 'MTV Unplugged' albumWell there was none of that unless you're talking Rap. To
be honest Ms. Hill is dope at whatever she does and her voice is so unique that she can own a mic easily with no doubt! But I did NOT come to see a Rap concert.

I realised after the first 4 songs it wasn't going to get much better and instead, it got worse and then very embarrassing. It was extremely painful to see my idol up there with people slating her. This was not the LAURYN I knew and loved listening to growing up.

I heard the intro of "Zion" and thought "Yessss" but that was all short lived. The band was shit and the song 'Twas nothing more than a very loud, jumped up sh*t remix! Lauryn Hill is NOT a pop artist neither does she have to pretend to be. I was so upset and disappointed. Heartbreaking ish!

Not once did I see her smile or look like she was even enjoying her performance. She was almost robot like. (Not sure if this was enhanced by some sort of drug but this was definitely not what I expected!) Instead, it was just one song, - sorry 'remix of her classics' - after the other with little interaction with the crowd.

I'm not saying she didn't slay when she sung, but it was a little too late by then so, I left early. Something I have never done at a concert!

Upon looking on social media sites and reading hear say from a few people, I heard she may have allegedly lost the rights to her songs? If true, then 'tis a sad day in the world of music.

Regardless, Ms Hill is still, and will remain one of my favourite female artists although, I will just have to reminisce by listening to 'The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill' album."

And there you have it folks...

Fashion: Date Night Look Book

When it comes to date night I think it's nice to make the effort.
Put on that sexy black dress, pull out the sparkly earrings, the heals and the bag that is far too small to fit a purse but it's all worth it in the end as you look good, you feel good and your man/woman is happy too :-)
A recipe for a great date!
With this look, the dress will do the talking.
For the accessories, try and go for bright and colourful.
Keep the hair loose and flirty, something like the fabulous Gabrielle Union:
