A little over a week ago, Mandla Maseko made headlines as The First Black African heading into space and in an interview with the BBC, shared his experiences to date as to how he not only got the opportunity but also, how he will commemorate such a monumental achievement.
Missing from the overall coverage though, (in my opinion) was the recognition and praise of African's across the Diaspora whose shoulders Maseko stands on; NASA's Black Astronaut's that include Robert Henry Lawrence Jr. who was the first qualified Black astronaut back in 1967 and Guy Bluford who was the first Black Man in space back in 1978!
As well as offering numerous Congratulations to Maseko, it's important to acknowledge all of the other Black Space Pioneers. Including those who were qualified, but for various reasons, did not get the opportunity to travel into Space.
