Although not a sold out event, The 90's RnB & Comedy Takeover hosted by funny man Kojo, was a slick rotation of laughs and great live performances.
After being warmed up by the DJ's for roughly 2 solid hours (who for the love of Morals need to permanently delete R. Kelly from their playlists!), the first comedian to take to the stage was Mr. Cee, who started things off all too right with his jokes about the dynamics of same sex friendships, explaining away all the things women can get away with, that men just can't and how overall women are just naturally stronger characters...except for the one woman who in his words, allowed herself to become so broken by a man, that in the wee hours of one morning, she took a hammer to his car (which was parked next to Mr.Cee's) then proceeded to light it up! #Jokes
Following on from his set, the first artist to grace the audience was the ever so petite and Beautiful Meelah, who breezed through 702's 'Steelo', 'Where My Girls At', 'Get It Together' and 'I Still Love You' without a hitch! Homegirl's voice is still in top form and as well as giving us a little taste of 'You Don't Know' (which she could've just added to the set for me), she also sung a little bit of a nice new track entitled 'Give It To You', which just so happens to be a collaboration with Musiq Soulchild.
The second comedian to keep the laughs coming was Dizzle, who prior to this show myself and Micky had never heard of, but certainly can not and will not forget after his hilarious banter regarding his love for big women and an encounter with a dude who unexpectedly came home from prison (while Dizzle was chilling with his girlfriend) and fell for Dizzle's emergency Good Judy act, proceeding to then run him down and ask for his What'sApp deets. #Dead
Next up to perform on the music front was Jon B, whose set list included 'Cocoa Brown', 'Pretty Girl', 'Are You Still Down', 'Someone To Love' (during which his badazz male backing vocalist owned Babyface's verse), 'They Don't Know' and 'Don't Talk'. I will throw my hands up and admit on behalf of Micky and myself, neither of us were familiar with Jon B as a live performer but good Gawd did he murder that stage! Still in fine voice, he was just so energetic and jammed hard on the keys covering Hall & Oates classic 'I Can't Go For That', putting everything he had and then some into his performance. Especially when he switched nationalities, going from American to Jamaican during 'Everytime'! L-O-L. He really was pleasantly surprising and only reinforced he's the dude Robbing Thick and Dustbin Timberfake want to be...#GenuineBlueEyedSoul
The last comedian up was veteran Slim, who kept the laughs going with his critique of today's kids, who act hard but really aren't with all their allergies and over padded bike gear worn because their too soft to pick up a scrape or two. The set was going well until an American tech decided it was okay to start setting up for SWV while Slim was performing, thus prompting the comedian to walk off stage and not come back. Now I understand that the Yank was wrong and should have apologized but, Slim really should have ridiculed him and just carried on because it was the audience who paid to watch him do a full set and in the end, were the one's short-changed by his decision...
Thanks to that, ushered on a few minutes earlier than scheduled, headliners SWV thankfully allowed the show to end on a great high. Treating us with renditions of 'So Into You, 'Anything', 'Right Here/Human Nature Remix', 'You're The One' (with a Remix twist)', 'Rain', 'It's All About You', 'Co-Sign', LaBelle's 'If Only You Knew' and 'Weak', complete with cute little choreographed steps, LeeLee's contagious sense of humour and a commanding presence, the Ladies proved yet again why they are in the G.O.A.T Vocal Group Hall Of Fame.
Overall verdict: definitely money well spent!
