PANGAEA:

NEW ART FROM AFRICA AND LATIN AMERICA

2 April 2014 - 31 August 2014

FREE!

The exhibition's title, Pangaea, refers to the prehistoric landmass that conjoined Africa and Latin America and includes examples of painting, photography, installation and sculpture drawn from across the two. While a few artists from Africa and Latin America have gained international acclaim, there are many more who remain virtually unknown. This timely exhibition reflects a growing interest in the art being produced in these regions, as well as a trend among UK museums to broaden their often Eurocentric collections.
With representation from Colombia, Senegal, Brasil, Ghana and other nations, the display reveals the shared experiences that continue to unite these peoples – such as rapid urban expansion, migration and political and economic unrest – even many of thousands of years after their separation.

***A World To Win: Posters Of Protest And Revolution
@ Victoria & Albert Museum***
Free

"Explore the power of posters at A World to Win: Posters of Protest and Revolution at the Victoria and Albert Museum. The engaging exhibition examines the way that posters have changed the world, from the Votes for Women campaigns early last century to more recent Occupy movements. Political activists worldwide have used the humble poster to mobilise, educate and organise fellow citizens, ensuring that the act of just making or displaying a poster is a political statement in itself. Representing an important form of cultural expression, the featured posters are based on themes of protest and political participation. With some brilliant examples on display, the work here spans a whole century of posters taken from the vast V&A archive, including some new acquisitions that are a thoughtful reminder of the power of clever design."

***Beautiful Science: Picturing Data, Inspiring Insight***
Where: British Library
When: 20 February – 26 May 2014
"Revealing how turning numbers into pictures has helped scientists to tell important stories since the 19th century. The exhibition explores how picturing scientific data has helped us to contextualise obscure facts and figures to give them greater meaning in our lives. From John Snow's 1854 plotting of the London cholera infections to illustrative depictions of the tree of life, examples on display reveal that our understanding of the world around us has evolved almost directly alongside our ability to represent, graph and map the mass data of the time."

***From Jamaica To Notting Hill - Rudi Patterson's Visions In Colour***
Thursday 4 April 2014 - Wednesday 11 June 2014
Leighton House Museum
12 Holland Park Road
London W14 8LZ
"For over forty years, following a career as an international model and actor, Rudi Patterson dedicated himself to painting. From the three successive council flats he lived in around Notting Hill he produced a vast body of work, exhibiting widely in London , the UK and internationally – from New York to Melbourne - throughout the 1970s, 80s and 90s. Following his death last year, this exhibition explores a single theme; Rudi’s extraordinarily potent and vivid representations of his native Jamaica. Including many works never previously exhibited, these depictions of montane landscapes, plantation villages, luxuriant tropical vegetation, rivers and beaches conjure a compelling sense of place, intuitively made from the vantage point of a West London window"

***Intimate Worlds***
Royal Albert Museum, London, UK
5th April-29th June 2014
"A series of items drawn from the Wellcome Collection which reflect on of the value and significance of sex.
Between 1900 and 1936, pharmaceutical billionaire Sir Henry Wellcome amassed over a million objects for his Museum of Medical History - a substantial proportion of which related to human sexuality. Wellcome believed these historical artefacts had the potential to reveal how sex has been understood and represented over time and across cultures.
Displayed together they prompt a consideration of many differing aspects of sexuality, from censorship, fertility and contraception to the boundaries between childhood and adulthood, as well as other contemporary issues"
