News: Petition To Save Historical Slavery Site In Virginia

While recently perusing various online articles discussing and celebrating the wins attained by '12 Years A Slave' at the Oscars, I came across a short comment containing this link for a petition on Change.org; City of Richmond Mayor Dwight C. Jones and City Council: Oppose Building a Baseball Stadium Development in Shockoe Bottom

Turns out, true to Western modus-operandi there is a not- so-publicized plan to turn a key area called Shockoe Bottom (which was also used as a parking lot) into a a foundation for a Baseball Stadium even though it was the second-largest U.S. market for the sale of enslaved Africans, where coincidentally Solomon Northrup himself was held before being sold into slavery.

The constant lack of respect shown for sites such as Shockoe Bottom, whether they be in the US, Africa, Europe or the Caribbean, is something that should be challenged because they are a part of a collective memory in very recent history.

I hope these plans collapse like a house of cards!
